No. Bed bugs are among the most stubborn household pests: a single female can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime, eggs hatch in one to two weeks, and adult bed bugs can survive for months — close to a year — without feeding. Hong Kong’s warm, humid climate accelerates breeding even further. Left untreated, the problem only gets worse and can spread to neighbouring units through wall cracks and conduits. No. Bed bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness — five-star hotels and luxury homes get them too. Bed bugs spread by hitchhiking on people and belongings: luggage from a hotel stay, second-hand furniture, cinema seats, offices, a friend’s sofa, even spread from a neighbouring flat. There’s no shame in having bed bugs — what matters is calling a specialist quickly.

Bed bug bites have several typical features: they appear in rows or clusters (sometimes called a “breakfast, lunch and dinner” line pattern), they concentrate on skin exposed during sleep (arms, neck, lower legs), and the itching is more intense and lasts longer than mosquito bites — often one to two weeks.
